MARILYN WHITLOCK

Instructor

Marilyn Whitlock loves learning and sharing that love with others. She has a bachelor’s degree in English education, a master’s degree in English literature, a graduate certificate in instructional design, and has completed coursework for a Ph.D. in English literature with a concentration in British literature of the 18th century. While completing her bachelor’s degree, Marilyn student-taught five sections of senior English and served as faculty advisor for the editors of a school newspaper. As part of her master’s degree studies, she taught remedial English grammar and composition skills. As a Ph.D. candidate, she received a full academic scholarship, was a graduate assistant, and taught freshman composition.

Since completing her education, Marilyn has taught in a variety of venues. She taught English literature and composition at both public and private schools before serving the homeschool community. While homeschooling, Marilyn taught courses in British literature, Shakespeare, and Old and New Testament survey courses at co-ops and as a private tutor. Most recently, Marilyn taught comprehensive secondary English classes, specialized literature classes, and advanced composition for an online academy.

Marilyn and her husband Dan live in Lee’s Summit, MO. They homeschooled their daughter Sara who, after achieving a nearly perfect score on the English section of the ACT, attended college on an academic scholarship and will shortly begin a graduate program. Recently both Marilyn and her daughter published articles, Marilyn’s, an article on the uses of The Oxford English Dictionary, was published in Practical Homeschooling and Sara’s, an article on the significance of bowing in The Brother’s Karamazov, was published in The Journal of Student Research. Mom and daughter enjoy writing and reading great books together.

Besides copious reading—she always has multiple books on her nightstand—Marilyn dotes on her Pomeranian Simba and enjoys singing in her church’s choir.

THE GREATEST ENGLISH TEACHER OF ALL TIME

"My son...is now at [a certain u]niversity. He just got a 100% on his paper in Intro to Humanities! He told me that, apparently, other students struggled because the professor wrote an encouraging message to the whole class about not being discouraged. I texted him back 'Mrs. Whitlock? 🙂' and this was his reply: 'Mrs. Whitlock was actually the greatest English teacher of all time. She's given me an absolutely MASSIVE leg-up time and time again.'  He said he appreciates your classes that he had so much."

YOU HAVE REALLY IMPACTED ME

Thank you so much for teaching me for two years! I have loved every minute of your classes. You have really impacted me; I used to hate English before your classes, and now I love it. I also feel like my writing has improved so much in your classes. I would love to keep in touch with you over the years.

VAST FEEDBACK

I wanted to thank you for all of your hard work this year with [my student]. [She] has thoroughly enjoyed your class and has raved about your organization, depth of material, development of grammar, and the vast feedback that you offer for essays and papers. We both believe that you personally have contributed greatly to her progression of writing skills this year, and that she will be prepared for...classes next year at the local community college.
