Chess Club (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)
Did you know that chess helps improve memory, intuition, determination, mental energy, discipline, study skills, time management, and total concentration? Your student can cultivate all of this and more! Coach Jon Santos invites students no matter the skill level. Each week participants work to improve their knowledge of chess and to develop those personal skills.
Join chess Coach Jon Santos for some great learning and fun! Both beginner and intermediate players will hone their skills and abilities all while receiving personal feedback on their game! Coach creates weekly instructional videos for club members to learn on their own time and answers various chess questions.
The online Chess Club is VERY easy and stress-free. Coach emphasizes learning at one’s own pace. Students can join the ZOOM Meetings that fit the student’s personal schedule. Coach Santos is always happy to give you assistance as needed. If a student needs to switch club nights, that is not a problem, just let Coach know!
What do the online meetings look like? They include Checkmate of the Day, Puzzle of the Day, Short Mini-Lesson, and then a Speed Chess Tournament! Come Tuesday night, come Wednesday, or come Thursday night! More chess players mean bigger Tournaments! Here is an intro to the club video.
Students will learn about the game, play each other, and identify areas for improvement in their strategy and execution. Using two useful software platforms to provide content knowledge and gaming, students will enjoy this interactive, tactile, and fun experience.
Enrollment is broken into summer, fall, and spring sessions. Tuesdays are for beginners, Wednesdays are for intermediate, and Thursdays are for advanced skill levels. Please watch this helpful video to help you discern which meeting might be best although students may attend what works best for their schedules.
- Session 1 – Summer Session – For the summer, Coach Jon will host one session on Thursdays beginning week of May 31, 2021 and ending week of July 26, 2021, skipping week of June 28, for a total of 8 sessions. The cost is $100 and $25 supply fee. When registering for summer session, please select “Variable” as the group below.
- Session 2 – Fall Session – For the fall, Coach Jon has a full 15 weeks of meetings with the Beginner Group on Tuesdays, the Intermediate Group on Wednesdays, and the Advanced Group on Thursdays. The club follows the weekly Excelsior Classes calendar. The cost for the fall session is $250 and $25 supply fee.
- Session 3 – Spring Session – For the spring, Coach Jon continues with a full 15 weeks of meetings with the Beginner Group on Tuesdays, the Intermediate Group on Wednesdays, and the Advanced Group on Thursdays. The club follows the weekly Excelsior Classes calendar. The cost for the spring session is $250 and $25 supply fee.
This club has rolling registration, and students can join at any time. Here is a calendar for SUMMER and part of FALL including all the fun events and tournaments involved in Chess club.
If you are not logged into your account, you may see a requirement for a 30% deposit to register; however, there is no charge to reserve for a club. Payment is due to teacher one week prior to first club meeting of the session in order to determine if the minimum number has been met.

Jon Santos graduated from the University of Houston – Downtown with a B.A. in Urban Education in 2013. His professional Chess career enabled him to travel and teach across the United States, begin several after-school programs across Houston, and help many students to become Chess Champions! Jon then took his love for teaching to help educate both public and homeschooling students wherever they are.
