Creative Writing – Ind. Study

In this Independent Study opportunity, students will submit a short story, a nonfiction narrative (or a blog project), and 3-5 poems to the instructor for review over the course of the semester. Students should plan to read several short stories, nonfiction narratives (or blogs), and poems leading up to the creation and submission of their own work. These selections do not have to be approved by the instructor, but the instructor can offer guidance and recommendations if desired. A rubric will be provided for each piece so that students know what is expected. Additionally, students will meet with the instructor 3 times a semester at the beginning of each section of study. All other correspondence will occur via email. If a nonfiction narrative or blog section is not of interest, students may present the instructor with an alternate idea; the alternative must be approved by the instructor prior to the start of the study.

Jess Woods currently resides in upstate New York with her husband and three children. Though she spent her childhood and adolescence in Georgia, Jess has lived in eight different states and has a fondness for traveling and experiencing different regions, as each one has taught her something about herself and about community. Jess enjoys reading, writing, and all things music (ok, most things music). Teaching is the perfect career for her since she loves being able to experience an appreciation for words and story come alive within other people.
