Film Directing and Producing

In the world of independent filmmaking, it’s essential to learn a broad range of skills. An emerging filmmaker must take on many roles, including the roles of Producer and Director. This course looks at filmmaking from a creative but non-technical perspective to give students the necessary skills to pull together a quality film project of any scale.

We will look in-depth at the specific roles of the Producer and Director, how they help to lead and create films, what they need to know and understand about stories, visual design, working collaboratively with other creative people, and the business side of filmmaking.

Projects include script analysis, visual design, storyboarding, lookbooks, short video design projects, scheduling, budgeting, and more. Even if you are still a beginner, if you are serious about becoming a well-rounded filmmaker, this course will take you to the next level.

Textbook: None required, but we will have readings from articles and web links I provide. I also have recommended texts if you are interested in deeper study.

“Flipped” Classroom Model: In order to cover more material in an on-line setting, students need to be prepared to watch pre-recorded lecture material before some weeks’ classes. This will be posted and explained. Working in this way helps to maximize live class interaction.

Equipment & Software: One of the great things about producing and directing is that you don’t need a lot of gear (unlike other parts of filmmaking!)  Students will need to have a working word processor and spreadsheet program and a DVD player/movie streaming service for most assignments. We also do a few practical video-based assignments for which the student will need to have access to a camcorder and basic editing software.

Tom Khazoyan has been teaching online film and screenwriting classes and in-person workshops and seminars since 2010. He began his career on the production side of the film and television business.
