Theater: Behind the Curtains
The finished work of a production that the audience sees is not indicative of the full amount of design and management work occurring behind the scenes. In this theatre appreciation class, students will learn about all the different types of offstage jobs and roles that make a theatre production successful. We will look at the different design roles (makeup, hair, set, lighting, costume, etc.) as well as the directing team, the stage management team, and even the business management side of things including branding and marketing. The goal of this class is to give a full understanding of all the different ways to be involved in theatre because it takes people with a variety of talents to bring a production to the stage.
This class consists of several design projects and encourages student participation in class. We will be reading and working from real plays including Mousetrap, Hamlet, and The Importance of Being Earnest, so come prepared to act and design! Excerpts of other plays will be provided. Mature dispositions are best suited for this course.
Microphone and camera capability are a requirement for this dynamic class experience.
