A general survey that emphasizes the technological, intellectual, and religious impact of western culture, especially as it influenced developments of the recent past. This course covers Creation through the 17th century. Students will complete assignments based on readings each week and will have three exams plus one final exam. With an emphasis on historical research and writing, students will complete several short writing assignments and one short research paper. Important skills that students will learn in the research process are critical thinking, finding primary and secondary sources, conducting research and note-taking, and developing and defending a thesis.

Susan Eggers loves learning about the past and the people of our world, and sharing that love with her students. She attended Wake Forest University as a William Louis Poteat scholar, where she earned her B. A. in History, graduating magna cum laude. Continuing her studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she received her M. A. in Russian history and completed additional hours of graduate coursework toward a Ph. D. While in graduate school, Susan received grants to conduct research in the Lenin Library and the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art in Moscow, the National Library and the Russian State Historical Archive in St. Petersburg, the Slavic and East European Library at the University of Illinois, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. She has presented conference papers across the country and has published several articles on Russian history.

Mrs. Eggers is an excellent teacher and my son has absolutely loved this class. He has taken the dual credit version of this class with her and found it to be challenging, but not at all overwhelming. It has been an excellent first dual credit class experience for him. We are so thankful for Mrs. Eggers and her ability to encourage great discussion and for choosing excellent course materials!
