Spanish I
Date & Time
Instructor
Grade Level
In this introduction to Spanish, students will learn to ask and answer questions, give and follow directions, talk about their families, express their likes and dislikes, order food in a restaurant, make invitations, and even begin to share the Gospel through Scripture memorization. In addition, we will explore a variety of Spanish-speaking cultures and a bit of the history and geography of the 20+ countries in which Spanish is spoken.
Learning Spanish is a skill-based activity much like learning to play a sport or a musical instrument. As a result, this course will be very interactive. Each class period, students will engage with the instructor and their fellow classmates in games and activities that develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. In order to fully participate, each student must come to class with a headset microphone.
Each week, homework will be assigned to reinforce the topics covered in class. In addition to the textbook activities, practice exercises include online exploration and grammar drills, Quizlet flashcards, videos, audio activities and mini-compositions. Assessments include tests, quizzes, and oral evaluations.

Martha Phillips was raised in a bilingual home and, thanks to her parents, is proficient in Puerto Rican Spanish, southern English, and Spanglish. She has lived in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and, as a military brat, many places in between.
Martha has a B.A. in Secondary Education and an M.A. in Spanish American Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, The College at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Guilford College.
Martha’s experience is not limited to the collegiate level. She has taught Spanish in high school and middle school, English as a Second Language from the preschool to the adult level, and has homeschooled her own delightful daughters for the past 19 years

Mrs. Phillips is an amazing teacher and I can’t recommend her enough! She really cares about her students and my son enjoyed having her as his Spanish I teacher. He will be taking Mrs, Phillips Spanish II class this new school year because he enjoyed her class so much.

Course review of Spanish I – First Semester
😄 6 out of 5 Stars!!!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐(The site won’t let me give more than 5 stars)
At first I was scared to take this class because I thought that a foreign-language course would be stressful and difficult for me. I was not looking forward to the course and only signed up because I had to learn a language for college…
That was until I met the teacher, Mrs. Phillips.
I do not know enough words in English or Spanish to fully describe just what a wonderful, sweet, enthusiastic teacher and person Mrs. Phillips is. She asks students how she can pray for them and checks on us and our prayer requests every week. Her sense of humor is amazing, her joyful personality is contagious, and she never stops smiling (even though some of us students, myself included, have not made it easy for her at times 😉). She encourages interaction from her students instead of just delivering lectures. She obviously cares about her students and her love for the language, for teaching, and for the Lord shines in every class. She never shames us for making mistakes, always encouraging us even if we pronounce every word wrong. In addition, she makes learning Spanish fun by incorporating appealing visual tools, funny videos, games, and learning songs/worship music. Even homework assignments are presented in intriguing ways! I also notice that she takes into account the fact that not every student learns and processes information the same because she presents the material in ways that cater to multiple learning styles including that of eye-learners, ear-learners, and kinesthetic learners.
I could go on and on about how awesome this class and instructor are. This is the class for students who despise school and/or students who have any sort of learning/information-processing difference. I enjoyed every second of my live classes over the past semester and I smiled and laughed so much that my face often hurt afterwards! 😁 Mrs. Phillips has taken the challenge out of Spanish and turned it into a pleasant experience, and I will be forever grateful to her for teaching in a way that has helped me to enjoy the subject I was originally terrified of!
Thank you Señora Phillips for making this the best semester ever!!! I can’t wait for the spring semester!!! 😃

My daughter loved this class! She was nervous to speak in front of others, but Mrs. Phillips does a wonderful job of building community and helping students feel confident.
