This engaging and practical half-credit course equips students with essential financial literacy skills to navigate real-world financial decisions with confidence.
Financial Literacy is the ability to understand and effectively use various financial skills including budgeting, saving, credit management and financial decision making. This class will give your student real work experience without the real world risk. Each student will choose a job and based on the average salary for that job plan a budget, find an apartment, and pay bills.
Students will explore banking fundamentals, including different types of accounts, managing transactions, and evaluating financial services. They will develop key money management skills, such as balancing a checkbook, budgeting, understanding credit, and managing debt, including credit card and retail financing.
The course provides a comprehensive overview of loan processes, including how to complete loan applications, as well as insights into inheritance and its financial implications. Students will gain foundational knowledge of insurance policies, learning about coverage options and risk management. They will also delve into taxation, learning how to compute federal income taxes and understand local tax assessments.
A strong emphasis is placed on understanding interest rates, contracts, savings and investment strategies, and key financial laws that impact personal finance.
By the end of the course, students will be well-prepared to make informed financial decisions, manage their personal finances responsibly, and build a strong financial future.
