Integrated Science: Chemistry and Physics (Physical Science)
Date & Time
Instructor
Grade Level
ICP (Physical Science) allows the student to survey both the chemical and physical aspects of the created world as they explore fundamental chemistry and physics principles. Students enrolled in this course examine, through the process of scientific inquiry, the structure and properties of matter, chemical reactions, forces, motion, electricity, and the interactions between energy and matter. This course provides a conceptual introduction to chemistry and physics.
This course includes light, practical math, such as basic arithmetic and substituting values into formulas with a calculator. Advanced math skills are not required. The instructor walks students through many guided examples in class, and additional help is available by email whenever needed.
Some states consider this course an equivalent to a 9th grade Physical Science or high school credit. Please write to the teacher for more information on this course for high school credit. This course is not in the high school progression for NCAA students.

Labs: The labs for this course will be supplied by the teacher after the course begins. The majority of items needed for the labs can be found around the house or easily picked up at a grocery or hardware store. There will be a few items that will need to be purchased online (i.e. circuit kit (~$15 and small gram scale ~$10) but most items can be obtained at a local grocery or drug store. A detailed labs supply list will be provided a few weeks prior to the course.
Dr. Amanda Hunter has enjoyed math & science since she was a child and became very interested in health care in high school which led her to Purdue University where she earned her Doctorate in Pharmacy in 2005. After seeing how closely diet and lifestyle are related to health and prevention of chronic disease, she also completed the Institute for Integrative Nutrition Health Coaching program in 2014.Â
While she loved working in a traditional Pharmacy setting, Amanda has the heart of a teacher. Amanda’s significant educational background combined with her collegiate coursework and teaching experience make her a wonderful math and science teacher. Her students have included pupils who are advanced STEM students and those who are not as STEM-inclined. Amanda works to make her classes very practical while maintaining a college-preparatory standard. Students will learn how algebra, science, and health concepts will be applied to their adult-lives even if they do not enter a math/science field!. Online teaching for the past 9 years has allowed her to combine her favorite things… teaching, children, math, science, and health.

This was our first experience with Excelsior Classes, and I must say it was money well spent. My son truly enjoyed the class. I was very impressed with Dr. Hunter, the content, and the experiments. We will definitely enroll our younger children in this class in the future. Thanks for a great year, Dr. Hunter!

Dr. Amanda Hunter’s Integrated Science course has made a remarkable difference in Aleks’s school year. From the start, he’s been truly drawn in. Dr. Hunter has a gift for turning complex topics into something inviting and even fun. Aleks doesn’t just end up with random facts – he shares insights about how the building blocks of matter fit together, why chemical reactions behave the way they do, or how forces and energy play out in daily life. It’s clear he’s grasping bigger ideas, not just memorizing details. What we notice as parents is how Dr. Hunter’s approach keeps anxiety at bay. Her calm teaching style and thoughtful, step-by-step practice with problems. Mrs. Hunter also always answers questions by email quickly, and that support goes a very long way for students (and us too!). Honestly, watching Aleks’s confidence deepen and his interest in science take off has been one of the best parts of this year. If you’re searching for a teacher who can ignite curiosity and make science approachable, Dr. Hunter is someone both students and families can count on.

Abel has really enjoyed Dr. Hunter’s class. It has been challenging but he is learning a lot and understanding. Dr. Hunter has been easy to communicate with and quick to respond to Abel’s questions. We have really liked this class!

We have two highschoolers enrolled in the Integrated Physics and Chemistry course this year, and they are thoroughly enjoying it. The labs are a highlight. The interaction and feedback from assignments makes the students feel like they are part of a real classroom. Dr. Hunter is a talented and experienced teacher who can help a student come to love science. Even though we live on the other side of the world, Dr. Hunter has been very helpful—accommodating for the time difference and sending the video recordings, etc. This course has been a great option for us, and I would definitely recommend it.

My son’s first experience at Excelsior was in the Integrated Chemistry Physics class with Dr. Hunter. I approached Dr. Hunter with specific questions about the class before enrolling my son, and her response to my e-mail was thorough and prompt. We were excited to enroll Cade in ICP after reading about her educational and collegiate training. Without a doubt, we knew Dr. Hunter was highly trained in the subject matter that she would be teaching! Once the class started, she did not disappoint. The instruction was delivered in an interesting format with an optimal balance between teacher-led instruction, student questions, labs, and learning games. My son, who can feel uncomfortable approaching an adult with questions, feels empowered to speak up if he is unsure about an assignment or if Dr. Hunter’s instruction spurs new questions about the material. Additionally, Dr. Hunter is prompt in providing feedback on assignments. Without a doubt, we recommend Dr. Hunter and the ICP class. It was money well spent on our son’s education.

My daughter took Chemistry and Physics in our first year of enrolling in Excelsior Classes. I didn’t really know how it would work at first, science online, but all my doubts were soon dissipated!! Mrs. Hunter is a fantastic teacher who made my daughter feel like she was in a real classroom, instead of a virtual one. I would absolutely recommend this class to anyone who wants a education, fun, and interactive science course with an amazing teacher who really cares about her students!! Thank you so much, Excelsior Classes and Mrs. Hunter, for such a great year in science.
