Carolyn Leonard

Instructor

Carolyn Leonard graduated from Southern Wesleyan University with a degree in Biology Education as well as a concentration in Chemistry.  She taught Biology and Chemistry at a public high school before going back to school to become a nurse.  She received her BSN from Vanderbilt University and worked as a nurse on a General Medical/Surgical floor of a hospital for over four years.  During that time, she obtained her Masters of Science with Nursing from Clemson University.  She currently is a part time family nurse practitioner at a Federally Qualified Health Center where she provides medical care to patients who are underserved, including those without insurance.

Carolyn has enjoyed utilizing her background in education to educate both patients and future nurses.  She has been a clinical instructor at a hospital for undergrad nursing students and a preceptor to many nurse practitioner students.  Although Carolyn taught high school science, she has always loved math.  During her time at Vanderbilt, she regularly tutored other students in the math portion of their classes.  She loves the logic in math and enjoys helping concepts “click” when teaching others.  She also truly utilizes math daily and knows how important math concepts are in life.

Carolyn and her husband, Matt, live in South Carolina with their two young children and two basset hounds.  She enjoys hiking, board games, and traveling.  Her favorite vacation is her extended family’s yearly trip to the beach.  She also loves spending as much time as she can working as a nurse at a summer camp for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.  She started as a counselor-in-training at this camp at age 17, and it has greatly shaped who she is today.
