General Art: Fine Arts will offer the opportunity for high school students to develop a keen understanding of the Elements and Principles of Design and a practical knowledge of how to use a varied range of traditional artist materials. Each week students will focus on a particular area of design, learning from a variety of historical and contemporary examples. Students will complete art projects each week incorporating concepts discussed in class. Additionally, student will take one trip to a museum or gallery of their choice during the semester. All projects will be explored in a non-digital format. Drawing, painting, sculpture, and other design formats will be explored. This semester we focus on balance, unity, contrast, emphasis, pattern, movement, and rhythm.

Who should take this?

  • Inexperienced artists/students who would like a general understanding of art to further round out their studies and skills. (You do not need to be “talented”; you just need to be willing to try.)
  • Experienced art students who are looking to try new materials and advanced challenges.
  • Focused artists who would like to incorporate the elements and principles of design into current work.

Special Note: Both courses/semesters of General Art: Fine Arts Focus will use a similar format, however, the material covered will be different and non-dependent on the previous semester. Students are welcome to join either course or both.

  1. Jennifer F.

I loved taking this class this year. I feel I was pushed in all the right ways and really grew as an artist. I learned how to take a vision for something and make it come to life. i was also pushed to experiment with new mediums and found some new mediums I loved working with and some others I want to continue to learn with. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone looking to explore art and enhance their skills.

  2. This was the first ever art class I have taken out of elementary school. I had basically no experience with anything other than doodling in my notebooks. This class broke the limits on what I thought I was capable of doing in art. I learned numerous different skills and learned how much I enjoyed other forms of art. I highly recommend this class to anyone seeking to enhance their art skills and broaden their view of what they are capable of.
