What if my student cannot attend all of the classes?

Classes are recorded and can be viewed on a computer or a smart phone. The chat is not recorded in the main viewing recording, but a transcript of "chat" is available. Students are responsible for the material covered in class, and so the recording should be viewed as soon as possible.

Where can I purchase textbooks?

All books and textbooks are available via Amazon or Barnes & Noble as well as other vendors. In some instances, a teacher may provide pdfs of work for the students.

How will the teacher know if my student is mastering the concepts and work?

Teachers are able to interact with students during class using a chat feature as well as dialoguing with students. Away from class, our Learning Management System (LMS) allows your student to take quizzes, tests, submit papers or other work, and discuss in small groups with the teacher or with other students. The teacher will assign grades, and you may view the gradebook at any time by logging in as your student. At the end of the semester or year, you may print out the gradebook. The teacher will send a final grade to you via pdf at the end of the course.

How will my student attend class?

Classes meet live and online using our virtual online platform. Students will have a link to the meeting emailed to them and posted in the classroom.

Your computer should operate with Windows 8 or higher as our classroom will not operate on a previous version. See here for more information on technical requirements for Windows and Mac. Phone users will not be able to fully participate in class, and so this is not recommended.

How will my student access the class recordings?

Class recordings are posted in our learning management system. The recording is the video of the class presentation only; chat messages are not recorded within the video.

Your computer should operate with Windows 7 or higher as our classroom will not operate on a previous version. See here for more information on technical requirements for Windows and Mac. Phone users will not be able to fully participate in class, and so this is not recommended. Windows 7 Media Player does not play the class recordings well.

What do we need to purchase in order to attend class?

High speed internet and a functioning computer installed with Microsoft Office products (or similar software) will create a strong foundation for your student’s participation. Students with dial-up access or without processing software often struggle in online classes.

Computer requirements for using the classroom platform are here. Windows 7 Media Player sometimes has trouble playing class recordings. A work-around solution is detailed here.

Students need to purchase a headset/microphone combo so that they can participate in class discussion. These can be purchased for around $15.
Each class will also require the purchase of various books, which are listed on the class description.

Some teachers may assess a supply fee. This fee may cover the cost of user licenses for your student’s access to various online materials including pdfs of textbooks, access to websites used for the class, or actual physical materials deemed necessary by the teacher. Such materials would be mailed to your student.

How much time is required by the student each week?

Each student will be provided work equivalent to the other four days of the “work week.” The amount of time each day will vary based on the student and based on the class level. However, it is reasonable to assume that anywhere between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours will be required to complete each homework assignment. The assignments for the upcoming week are posted prior to class on a weekly page in the Learning Management System (LMS).

What is required of the parent?

The parent should provide general oversight of the student’s work. Ensuring that the student attends class, has the proper materials, and is progressing is very helpful. Teachers will do the grading of quizzes, tests, and other projects. Providing class materials and functioning computer and microphone are crucial as well.

How do teachers handle late work?

Teachers are responsible for setting their individual late work policies and for due dates. If a student must miss work due to illness or death in the family, please notify the teacher as soon as possible. If the student will miss due to vacation or other school opportunities, please notify the teacher well in advance. In order to keep our grading turnaround timely, most teachers do not typically accept or grade late work, but work may be acquired in advance. Some teachers are able to drop grades, and so checking with the teacher in advance is recommended.

What can I expect from the teacher?

Teachers provide online instruction, feedback, grading, and testing for the course. Our teachers will treat your student with respect and in an encouraging manner. All teachers provide an email and a phone number and are available for brief meetings in the classroom by appointment with enough notice.

Teachers are not private tutors, and so we ask both parents and students to understand that teachers are not able to provide unlimited amounts of time for outside class meetings.

Why are there no classes for students younger than 6th grade?

Excelsior Classes wants to focus on sustained growth, and we felt it best to limit the number of staff and classes in the beginning of our venture. Additionally, we want to think carefully and deeply about the nature of online learning for the young student. There is a great deal of research about the effects of online learning on the elementary-age student, and much of it is contradictory. We do not want to create a one-size-fits-all approach for students of all ages. By taking our time to research and refine a product offering for young learners, we feel we can better serve the homeschool community.

Is there a school calendar?

Please see calendar here.

How do I register for classes?

To register for a class, you will click on the Register button. Fill out the registration form that pops up. You will fill out one form per student. Upon receipt of your form, the registrar will send you an invoice payable by PayPal for the registration fee. If you are registering more than one student, the registrar will collate all the forms, and send you only one invoice for the entire family. Once you have paid the yearly (school year) registration fee for the student(s), the registrar will confirm your seat in the class(es) and forward your information to the teacher(s). Teachers will invoice parents separately from the registration fee and will require 25% deposit to hold the seat. All tuition must be paid in full to teachers by August 1 (for fall semester and full-year courses) or December 15 (for spring semester only) in order for the seat to be complete and for the student to be placed into the virtual classroom.

Timing of registration for 2017-2018 classes for full-year and fall semester courses is as follows:

  • Regular registration ends August 1, 2017 (midnight ET).
  • Late registration occurs between August 1 - August 18, 2017 (midnight ET). Late registration fee is $35 per student.
  • Emergency registration occurs between August 19 - August 26, 2017  (midnight ET). Emergency registration fee is $50 per student.

Timing of registration for 2017-2018 spring semester (only) classes is as follows (for new students only):

  • Regular registration ends December 15, 2017 (midnight ET).
  • Late registration occurs between December 16 - January 5, 2018 (midnight ET). Late registration fee is $35 per student.
  • Emergency registration occurs between January 6 - January 13,  2018 for full-year and fall semester courses (midnight ET). Emergency registration fee is $50 per student.

May I transfer classes?

Yes, you may transfer classes before the end of the first week of classes, but there is a $20 service charge payable to the first (former) teacher. To request a transfer, please email registration@excelsiorclasses.com with the name of the student, the old class (date/time/teacher), and the desired new class (date/time/teacher). The last day to request a change for the fall or full-year is August 26, 2017 (midnight) and for spring semester January 13, 2018 (midnight). There are no refunds for classes other than what is stipulated in "What is the Refund Policy?"

What are class minimum and maximum numbers? What if the class I want is full?

Our typical class sizes range anywhere from 15-28 students per section, with each teacher having the discretion to decide what class size works best based on the content and structure of the course, the age of the students, and other considerations.

If the class minimum is not met, a full refund or transfer to a different class will be provided.

Should a class reach capacity, a wait list will be established in some cases. Spaces will be allocated to the wait list as openings become available after August 1, 2017. To join the wait list, email registration@excelsiorclasses.com with student name and course requested.

What are the financial arrangements for classes?

There is a nonrefundable registration fee per student to secure a seat in any class. The registration fee is good for one school year; students may register in any number of classes. The fee is $25 per student with a family maximum of $75. 25% of the course tuition shall be paid at registration to the teacher(s) in order to hold the class seat(s) for the student.  This payment is non-refundable. The remaining tuition will be due to teacher(s) by August 1 for fall one-semester courses and full-year courses. Anyone registering after August 1 must pay tuition in full at the time of registration and will be subject to a late registration fee.  The remaining tuition for one-semester spring courses will be due on December 15.  Anyone registering after this date must pay tuition in full at the time of registration and will be subject to a late registration fee. All tuition payments are made directly to the teacher(s) via check or Paypal or other electronic payment method.

Since the individual teacher receives all tuition payments for courses offered through and serviced by Excelsior Classes, issues of tuition are between the student/parent and the teacher. Excelsior Classes in no way warrants payment due to unforeseen events or circumstances of the teacher.

What is the refund policy for classes?

In the event a student should drop a course prior to the first week of class,  there is a refund of funds paid minus the 25% non-refundable deposit. If a student withdraws during the first Monday through Saturday of the first week of classes, there is a refund due of 50% of funds paid excluding the 25% non-refundable deposit.  This is August 21-26, 2017, for the fall term and January 8-13, 2018, for the spring term. Notification must be made to both the teacher and to registration@excelsiorclasses.com. After August 26 (fall semester or full year courses) or January 13 (spring semester courses), there is no refund due as it is unlikely the teacher will fill that classroom seat.  (Full-year courses with two teachers are considered full-year courses.) Notification must be made to both the teacher and to registration@excelsiorclasses.com. After the first week of class, there is no refund due as it is unlikely the Teacher will fill that classroom seat.  (Full-year courses with two teachers are considered full-year courses.)

Since the individual teacher receives all tuition payments for courses offered through and serviced by Excelsior Classes, issues of tuition are between the student/parent and the teacher. Excelsior Classes in no way warrants payment due to unforeseen events or circumstances of the teacher.

What are the financial arrangements for clubs?

There is a nonrefundable registration fee to secure a family membership in the club. All tuition payments are made directly to the teacher by means of check or Paypal.

What is the refund policy for clubs?

The tuition payment for clubs is nonrefundable. Parents may transfer the course to another family/student within the first two months of club meetings if that family pays the registration fee.

Since the individual teacher receives all club tuition payments for courses offered through and serviced by Excelsior Classes, issues of such payments are between the student/parent and the teacher. Excelsior Classes in no way warrants payment due to unforeseen events or circumstances of the teacher.

What is your Statement of Faith?

All teachers are Christians with a strong walk with the Lord who agree to teach from a Christian worldview and who believe the tenets of the Apostles’ Creed or the Nicene Creed:

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
begotten from the Father before all ages,
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made;
of the same essence as the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and was made human.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried.
The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead.
His kingdom will never end.
And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life.
He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
He spoke through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and to life in the world to come. Amen.
