Why Take This Course? Whether you plan to be an artist, an engineer, a lawyer, or an entrepreneur, you will always be a “user” of a human body. This class teaches you how to analyze the biological systems you inhabit and how to evaluate the external factors—from microbes to marketing—that affect your health and freedom.
Step into the world of applied science where biology meets real-world investigation taught through a Biblical worldview. This course examines the biological forces that shape individuals and societies. By integrating genetics, microbiology, biomechanics, forensics and nutrition, students will gain a holistic understanding of human wellness and the scientific tools used to protect it. Key themes include the molecular basis of heredity, the biological techniques used in criminal investigations, the impact of pathogens on the human body, and the biochemical relationship between diet and health.
Designed for the inquisitive student, this course goes beyond the academic subjects and focuses on mastering the elite problem-solving and critical thinking skills required to navigate your own health and the modern world. Rather than rote memorization, this course focuses on systems thinking. You will learn to use the scientific method as a tool for daily decision-making, helping you to separate biological facts from marketing fiction.
SPECIAL NOTE: Advanced Biological Science A: Biomedical Science is a continuation of Biology rather than an accelerated introduction, and completion of Biology is required before enrollment.
Please view prerequisites and required supplies below.
No formal textbook is used. Content is dynamic and delivered exclusively through a curated collection of up-to-date, specialized materials, ensuring relevance to current scientific research and healthcare practices. Resources utilized include:
- Primary Scientific Literature:Â Current journal articles, medical research papers, and authentic case studies.
- Professional Media:Â Expert lectures, instructional videos, and interactive simulations from medical institutions.
- Digital Tools:Â Advanced 3D anatomy programs, specialized data acquisition software for lab work, and bioinformatics databases.
- Inquiry-Based Labs:Â Structured and student-designed protocols focusing on authentic scientific techniques.
Laboratory Component: Because this is a college prep course, we will perform experiments throughout the course. We will use a variety of virtual and hands-on experiments. For the hands-on experiments, many items can be purchased at your local grocery or drug store. Several items will need to be purchased from a Biological Supply Company at a very minimal cost. A complete list will be provided in the summer.
Kerrie Childress has a love for science that she desires to pass along to every student she teaches. She graduated in 1996 with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Bob Jones University and in 2001 with a M.A. in Health and Exercise Science from Furman University. She has over 15 years of teaching experience in 3 states and several different platforms. Kerrie is also currently teaching on-line for a local community college as well as teaching science classes at Excelsior Classes.
