COURSE CONTENT INFORMATION

High school biology is a fascinating journey that will aid students in understanding what life is and how it works.  Whether it is looking into the microscopic world of DNA or the vast array of animals and how they interact on this planet, students will appreciate the great design of life here on earth.  Topics covered include characteristics of life, biomolecules, cells, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, DNA, protein synthesis, cell reproduction, genetics, classification of living organisms, and kingdoms of life which include bacteria, protista, fungi, plants, and animals.  Students are given options concerning the topic of evolution and creation to allow families to choose what will work best for them, knowing that families have different views on this topic.

Students will participate in labs throughout the year to further their understanding of topics.  Labs will include some virtual online labs as well as some hands-on labs done at home.  Students will also learn how to write a lab report and will turn in several of these lab reports throughout the year.  Students will receive a lab kit in the mail once registration is complete that will include items for completing labs throughout the year.  There will be some materials supplied by the student from home, but these would be common items, such as dish soap, salt, eggs, etc.

SELF-PACED INFORMATION

Our self-paced offering allows students to work at their own pace in our learning management system. Students are provided with a full year of access from the date of login generation and access.

Using a modular approach, this course is the equivalent of our regular live session course in terms of content, assessment, and feedback. Included in your purchase is a block of two hours of live meeting time with the teacher. This may be used in 15 minute increments. Once past the two hours, parents may purchase additional time (if necessary) from the instructor.

At the end of the twelve month time period or upon earlier completion of the course, a Final Grade PDF will be provided of the grade. Should the student not complete the course, an audit or the grade at the final week of the course completed by the student will be sent.

Questions? Write to registration@excelsiorclasses.com.

SPECIAL NOTE: There are no refunds for any self-paced course once the purchase has been made. Students are provided with a full year of access from date of login generation and access. Please purchase the course when you are ready to start the course.

High School Biology Text of your choosing (see note below).  If you choose this option, the student will need to be able to navigate the index of the book to find chapters that include the information corresponding to the topic we are covering in each unit of the self-paced course.

Note:   The textbook is not the sole resource for information studied in our class, but rather is used as a resource for further reading and for information gathering for certain assignments.  Students are taught material via “fill-in-the-blank note packets” provided by the teacher to streamline the main concepts and highlight information to know.

New students may be able to obtain a Science Shepherd Biology used book from a student in a previous year’s class for a discounted price by joining the private Excelsior Book Exchange on Facebook.

Lab Supplies: Students will receive a lab kit in the mail after registration that will include lab items needed during the year.   Students will supply from home some perishable or liquid items such as liquid detergent, milk, salt, etc. (a complete list will be given in class).  The kit also includes a lab booklet with all lab instructions, and spaces to record data and attach lab reports.  This will provide a thorough documentation of the lab component of biology, which is required for high school biology credit.  The lab kit will be approximately $100 and the teacher will give instructions for paying this lab fee once registration is complete.

Debbie Stokes

Debbie Stokes has been teaching science classes since 1991 and still finds great awe in how  beautifully and intricately the Creator designed all things. She finds it a great privilege to  journey through the “study of life” with students!

Debbie graduated cum laude from Kennesaw State University in 1991 with a B.S. in biology. She  soon after earned her M. Ed. in science education from Georgia State University. Debbie taught  high school science classes in the public school system of Cobb County, Georgia for sixteen  years and has taught science classes online since 2011. She describes her teaching style as a  combination of passion for the subject matter mixed with creativity and fun.
